It's no coincidence that the scriptures talk a lot about weddings. Jewish tradition speaks a lot about the sacred bond of marriage. Catholic theology tells us that marriage is a sacrament in the same way that baptism and communion are holy and sacred. Jesus' first miracle was at the wedding at Cana. Later passages describe the love between God and his people as the bridegroom and the bride on their wedding day. I think it's safe to say we know a God who loves love- and who loves the celebration of love.
When we started dreaming about getting married, dreaming about the wedding day came with it. People told us from the beginning that we needed to figure out what was important to us and stick with it. Having ice sculptures or fancy chairs, or even party favors wasn't important to me- and it was easy to leave all of that out. When it really came down to it, we wanted the day to be about Jesus- we wanted to celebrate why we were there and the kind of love we were committing to. And we wanted to include people that meant a lot to us.
It was important to us that we got married in Bellingham. We were both born and raised here- and getting married anywhere else was never really up for discussion. So we got married in the same building where local crafters and farmers sell their goods on Saturday mornings.
The pastor of our church performed the ceremony, his wife prayed a blessing for us, and their four daughters were our flower girls. Their family walked with us through pre-engagement counseling and a 'transitions' course they hosted at their home. We're honored to have Jesus loving people in our lives who point us closer to Him, and even more honored that the Knipp family was part of our wedding day.
We splurged on dinner and had an amazing company park their truck in the parking lot and cook pizza. They use fresh local and ingredients and they were so fun to work with. It definitely wasn't traditional wedding food- but it was so fun!
After dinner, we ate pie and ice cream. My sister, aunts, friends (and even my mom's high school locker partner!) baked more than 30 pies for us. It's amazing how people show love and show up.
Our wedding day was simple. There was babies breath on the tables and big signs lettered by my maid of honor. No theme. No agenda. Just pizza and dancing.
When I look back on what made our day so incredible, it all fell on the people that were there. I don't know how many times throughout the planning process I said, "I just want people there that I love". It was important to us (and so fun) to involve people that we know and love. My oldest childhood friend designed the invitations. The best man's brother did the video. Nolan's parents neighbor helped with music. My mom's friends served dessert. Not only did our favorite people attend the wedding- they got to be part of it!
In addition to deciding what was going to be important- people told me I would have all sorts of regrets about the wedding day and that things were bound to go wrong. Most people were shocked to find out that we were engaged for 4 months and that we started planning 100 days away. But after all the fuss, I can't think of anything that I would change. It felt like our wedding- which I know is a funny thing to say, but it did. At the end of the day, we were married- and we had fun!
To pull it off planning a wedding in four months, we had to enlist some pretty kick ass people. We're so lucky to have incredible family, friends, and a network of small-town connections who pitched in. Here's a list of all the wonderful people who helped make our day happen:
